Summer is tick season throughout the country and right here in the Boise area. Ticks are dangerous insects that are responsible for sickening hundreds of thousands of people every year. Ticks spread diseases like STARI, Tularemia, Lyme disease, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF). The Idaho tick season has been relatively mild so far, but according to one article, cases of RMSF in the state are serious and are a cause for concern.

Now there is a new weapon in the fight against ticks. According to a new study published in the May 2018 issue of the Journal of Medical Entomology, permethrin treated clothing works to repel ticks. Permethrin is a synthetic insecticide that is made from compounds found in chrysanthemum flowers. It has been around for a long time, but companies have started to market clothing that has been treated with permethrin.

The research shows that people who wear permethrin treated clothing get noticeably less ticks. Lab tests revealed that clothing that was treated with just .5% permethrin caused most ticks to fall off quickly. The ticks were also unable to move or bite after only 5 minutes. The species of ticks that were tested were all carriers of the major tick-borne diseases that affect the United States, including Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

While it was previously possible to treat clothing with permethrin by yourself, these new lines of manufactured clothing help make it easier and faster for the average person to stay safe from ticks. Permethrin treated clothing has been shown to be safe because it is absorbed poorly through the skin, and the protection can last up to 70 washes.

In addition to permethrin treated clothing, the CDC guidelines to prevent ticks also include: using an insect repellent that contains DEET or other approved substances, staying in the middle of trails, avoiding tall weeds and grasses, and performing tick checks as soon as you get home from spending time in nature. Hopefully this new research will lead to fewer cases of tick-borne diseases and help keep families safe.
